Two years after its launch, tech founder Avi Schiffmann has unveiled an upgraded Friend, an AI wearable that now comes with a built-in speaker projecting a unique personality to the user. The product's new commercial highlights conversations between users and their Friends, ranging from intimate discussions about relationships to career aspirations. However, the $249 price tag is significantly higher than its initial launch price of $99.
Despite Schiffmann’s ambitious claims, it remains unclear what practical benefits this AI wearable offers beyond chitchat. The founder suggests that Friend could serve as a confidant or even a spiritual companion, though he clarifies that it does not function as an assistant or lover.
The introduction of voice adds a new dimension to the product but also raises questions about its commercial viability and user engagement. Past marketing strategies, such as defaced billboards in New York City’s subway system, hint at the challenges Schiffmann faces in popularising his concept.
While Friend may seem like a quirky novelty for now, it reflects broader trends in AI technology designed to combat loneliness. However, whether people are willing to pay premium prices for such products remains to be seen.
