Google's Chrome browser has stepped up its security game, releasing twice-weekly updates to patch a staggering 1,072 bugs in June alone. This marks a significant shift as the security team increasingly relies on artificial intelligence (AI) tools for vulnerability hunting and fix development.
The move towards bi-weekly major releases with additional weekly security updates reflects a new normal in software engineering. According to Doug Turner, Chrome's director of engineering, this cadence is driven by an overwhelming surge in bug discoveries that the team has successfully integrated into their workflow.
Parisa Tabriz, vice president and general manager of Chrome’s security team, highlights how AI has transformed vulnerability hunting from a manual process to one that is highly automated. 'In Chrome we’ve been using machine learning—using AI before it was called AI—to help find vulnerabilities in particular and automate security fuzz testing work since at least 2012,' she explains.
Despite the optimism, researchers like Tabriz and Turner acknowledge a potential future where the relentless flow of new bugs might subside. 'There's this near-term spike, but I do think there’s going to be a new equilibrium,' says Tabriz. The hope is that such advancements will lead to more secure software development practices across the board.
