Robotaxis Set to Roll Out Across Europe

As AI-driven vehicles take to European streets, are we ready for a future where cars think and drive us?

Chinese autonomous vehicle maker Pony.ai and ride-hailing giant Uber have partnered to bring 2,000 robotaxis across four European cities. This ambitious project showcases the expanding reach of both companies in carving out a slice of the nascent robotaxi market.

The partnership builds on more than a decade of collaboration between the two firms. Pony.ai has already launched its services in several Chinese cities and is now eyeing markets in Europe and the Middle East, including Qatar. Meanwhile, Uber’s extensive network of over 30 autonomous vehicle partners indicates a strategic move to dominate this burgeoning sector.

Details on deployment timelines and launch cities have not been disclosed, but the companies hint at phased rollouts. The Guangzhou-based firm will supply the self-driving technology, while Uber leverages its global platform for dispatching rides. Fleet management details remain flexible, potentially involving different ownership structures depending on local markets.

This partnership marks a significant milestone since their initial collaboration in 2025 with a focus on the Middle East. Earlier this year, they announced plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia, through local partner Verne. The move signals a clear path for Pony.ai’s technology towards broader European adoption.
