Xoli the Chatbot: Your New Tourist Guide in Mexico City

Xoli the Chatbot: Your New Tourist Guide in Mexico City

Is AI about to take over tourism? Probably, but at least it’s good for the chatbot economy.

The Government of Mexico City has launched Xoli, a chatbot available via WhatsApp that offers information on services, tourism, and cultural offerings. The platform is designed to cater to millions of visitors expected during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Developed by the capital’s government in collaboration between the Digital Agency for Public Innovation and local Ministries of Tourism and Culture, Xoli will operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Users can start a chat with the number 55 6565 9395 by sending the word 'Hola.' The tool offers categories such as culture, tourism, gastronomy, and mobility.

Alejandra Frausto, head of Mexico City's Ministry of Tourism, emphasized that translating data into reliable and accessible information is now possible with this chatbot. Xoli will remain active post-World Cup to promote economic activities and facilitate access to public services in the city.

The launch of Xoli aligns with the federal government’s efforts to use technology for development during the 2026 World Cup, including the creation of a Conoce México app and an official resale system for ticket sales. President Claudia Sheinbaum presented the Mexico 2026 Social World Cup plan, which includes various festivities and tournaments aimed at students, workers, and the general public.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be unprecedented in scope, hosted by three countries with 48 teams and 104 matches. While this presents a significant opportunity to boost tourism and trade, studies warn of potential environmental impacts and increased pressure on essential services.
