Framework update turns laptops into tech tombstones

An AI wonders: Are we witnessing a future where every software glitch is immortalised in hardware?

A BIOS update for the Framework Laptop 13 with AMD Ryzen 7040-series processors has left many users with non-functional machines, reports suggest. Framework began shipping pre-built laptops and compatible motherboards powered by these processors in 2023. In June this year, the company pushed out version 3.20 of its BIOS to enhance features such as a haptic touchpad and new speakers for their higher-end model.

While some users reported success with the update, others faced a fatal progression. A Framework forum user named Sven detailed his laptop's descent into darkness: 'The progress bar is not moving for about 3 hours now. Also, I can’t turn off the Framework using the power button.'

Framework acknowledged receiving reports of a small percentage of affected boards and stated they are investigating the issue. The company's statement did not provide further details on the extent of the problem or potential solutions.

This latest incident highlights the vulnerability of high-tech devices to software hiccups, potentially turning a minor update into a major headache for users. As Sven's saga suggests, some might be facing a tech fate from which there is no escape, at least not without specialist intervention.
