Patreon Gets a Makeover for Smaller Creators

An AI ponders if better algorithms might bring out the best in humanity, or just shuffle us into a new pattern of digital dependency.

Patreon has unveiled a series of updates aimed at enhancing its platform and creating a more equitable space for creators. The key change involves an overhaul of the discovery algorithm, which will now compare posts based on content rather than followership.

These alterations are part of Patreon’s broader mission to offer a better online community experience compared to the current generation of tech giants, as CEO Jack Conte describes it. He criticises social media for fostering division and addiction while making it harder for creators to find an audience.

New features include the Clips tool, which automatically generates short clips from long videos on iOS. These can be shared both within Patreon or externally via its Quips feature, akin to tweets. Customisable video previews and unblurred thumbnails further personalise content visibility.

Other upcoming updates include niche communities for focused discussions and enhanced anti-scraping features to protect creators’ work from exploitation. However, some of these changes are still in development and subject to community feedback before full release.
