Waymo has submitted its responses to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as part of an investigation into a January 2023 incident where a robotaxi struck a child in Santa Monica.

The documents, posted on NHTSA’s website, are heavily redacted, likely due to “confidential business information.” The probe encompasses Waymo's software documentation and details on how they determine speed limits around schools.

On January 23, the incident occurred when a nine-year-old girl stepped into the street while near a school. The robotaxi was moving at 17 miles per hour but slowed to six before hitting the child, who sustained minor injuries and walked away from the scene.

The NHTSA investigation is ongoing, having received responses from Waymo well beyond its initial deadline. The company has asked for clarification on some questions and an extension of time to respond fully.
