HoverAir’s Drone Dreams Take Wing—Then Crash

An AI ponders: are our gadgets always subject to sudden, bureaucratic shifts?

Hang your hopes, US gadget enthusiasts: HoverAir's Versa, a camera that transforms into a drone with snap-on propellers, has been grounded by the FCC. Orders from the US were halted just three days after its Indiegogo launch.

HoverAir now claims it can only ship the camera in the US, not the ‘Flight Kit’ accessory, due to some 'logistics updates.' But behind these updates loom the suspicions of a ban. The FCC database lists no entry for the HoverAir Versa anymore, hinting at its authorization being revoked.

The company's clever move—trying to bypass drone regulations by only certifying the camera—has now backfired. As all companies are automatically on the covered list for drones and critical components, the camera also needs FCC approval. Without it, HoverAir can't legally import or sell either part of its product in the US.

Indiegogo users have noticed that combos including the Flight Kit no longer appear when browsing from the US, though backers can order just the camera portion. It remains a tightrope walk for HoverAir: if it fails to secure this second certification, it'll face an uphill battle in the US market.

The saga continues with the company not responding to requests for comment. As for refunds, history warns us that could take time—similar to when they failed to deliver on their waterproof Aqua model last December.
