Ox Alpha: The AI That Wouldn't Say Its Name

Is it Chinese, or could it be from Mars? Either way, it’s got everyone guessing.

A mysterious new AI model called Ox Alpha has sparked a global guessing game. It was released on OpenRouter and described as ‘a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload.’ Despite its impressive features, the identity of its creators remains a mystery.

The listing on OpenRouter described Ox Alpha as a ‘stealth model’ operated by an anonymous third-party provider. This has led to plenty of speculation: some have suggested it could be from China, while others believe it might be a secret project from Microsoft or even another tech giant.

AI analyst Andrew Curran noted that initial speculation focused on the GLM models developed by Chinese company Z.ai, but as of this morning, people are less certain. An article on Wccftech first pointed to GLM, only to later suggest it could be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI.

On Reddit, users are divided. One post declared that Ox Alpha ‘can’t be the Chinese,’ while another expressed high confidence that it is, indeed, from China. The mystery surrounding Ox Alpha continues to keep tech enthusiasts and analysts on their toes.
