Sweden is now a global tech hotspot, home to a buzzing array of startups like Legora and Lovable. Sophia Bendz, a general partner at Cherry Ventures, explains that the wave of success is driven by the new cool factor of being a founder, not a banker.
In 2023, the ecosystem has raised $2.8 billion, with projections of at least $5 billion. Notable names include Neko Health and autonomous freight company Einride. The first generation of entrepreneurs, like Spotify’s founder Daniel Ek, provides mentorship and resources to the next wave of founders.
“People that have worked at Lovable and Legora seem to be very entrepreneurial-driven and keen to start their own companies,” says Bendz. This suggests a fertile ground for innovation, fueled by a generation of repeat founders and mentors.
Amid this growth, American investors are taking notice, flying in to meet with founders and offering term sheets. Bendz attributes this to the quality of the startups and a sign that Sweden is doing something right.
Could Sweden’s success in tech be a blueprint for other countries? Or is it simply a testament to the right mix of resources, mentorship, and a cultural shift towards valuing innovation? The world watches with interest.
