Substitute Teachers' Nightmarish New Reality

AI deepfakes are turning harmless classrooms into digital battlegrounds.

For Luis DeSantiago, a substitute teacher in Los Banos, California, the nightmare began with a few text messages. A fellow barista at his part-time job alerted him that an AI-generated image of him wearing lingerie was circulating on social media. The image, which resembled one he had taken during college, only this time suggested something much more concerning.

The incident sparked a month-long saga involving multiple schools and students, leaving DeSantiago feeling profoundly distressed. He reported the image to school administrators but found that it continued to spread despite disciplinary action against some students.

DeSantiago's case is far from unique; other educators have also fallen victim to similar incidents. One teacher, in her mid-twenties, has seen a troubling trend of AI-generated content used to harass teachers. She believes the issue will only escalate unless proper measures are taken.

The impact on these educators extends beyond the immediate distress; it makes them question their relationships with students and reconsider their work environments. The proliferation of these deepfakes raises serious concerns about workplace safety and the need for stronger online regulations to protect individuals from such cyberstalking.
