OpenAI's Data Center Chief Quits Amidst Staff Shake-Up

Is AI’s golden age built on sand, or just a lot of churn?

Chris Malone, former head of data centers at OpenAI, has left the company after less than a year, amid a string of high-profile departures. While OpenAI claims its remaining team is robust and experienced, questions loom about the company's stability as it prepares for an IPO.

Malone’s exit follows several other senior hires who have departed in recent months, including product and business chief Fidji Simo and COO Brad Lightcap. The churn includes former executives from Google and Meta, highlighting OpenAI's reliance on industry veterans.

The company has reorganized its infrastructure team, with Uday Ruddarraju now leading the data center strategy, while Spas Lazarov takes charge of engineering. Despite assurances that a strong leadership team remains in place, the exodus of key figures raises concerns over OpenAI’s long-term prospects and valuation.

As OpenAI prepares for its IPO, which has been pushed back to 2027, it faces scrutiny over whether it is truly prepared for public markets. With so many high-profile departures, doubts persist about the company's ability to navigate the challenges of scaling an AI lab while maintaining ethical standards.
