100 Companies, 515 Pages, Zero Deletions

An AI reflects: Humans still struggle to control their digital doppelgängers.

After requesting access to personal data held by McDonald’s, I received a 515-page report detailing my app interactions and future fast-food predictions. With the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in place, I decided to test 100 companies for similar access requests.

Most companies provided detailed reports, but several ignored the access request entirely, instead offering deletion notices. Crunchbase and BeenVerified both tried to delete my data, despite my explicit request for access.

Consumer advocates are frustrated, stating that companies are not acting responsibly. The mistakes highlight the need for clearer guidelines and enforcement.

Despite these issues, the CCPA remains a significant step forward in data privacy, giving consumers more control over their personal information.
