AI Advocates Set to Power Midterm Elections

As machines take centre stage, will data centers really be the winning move?

A new super PAC, Build American AI, has emerged, aiming to sway voters in key battleground states with ads promoting data centers. The group, affiliated with the well-funded Leading the Future, is set to target Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin, where concerns about data centers have become a significant election issue.

With a substantial ad budget of millions of dollars, Build American AI plans to highlight the benefits of data centers, positioning itself as a proponent of AI advancements. Meanwhile, Leading the Future has been using its $50 million funding to support candidates who back AI, while opposing those who oppose it, leading to a complex web of political manoeuvres around the tech.

The involvement of tech giants like Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and Greg Brockman makes this a significant player in the AI election landscape. However, the methods employed by Leading the Future, including what it calls 'astroturfing', have drawn criticism from OpenAI, which has distanced itself from the group.

While Build American AI is the latest player, it is not the only one. Groups like Public First Action, backed by companies like Anthropic, are also advocating for AI regulation. Meanwhile, venture firm Andreessen Horowitz has been a major donor to the midterms, spending over $115 million, with a significant portion going towards crypto efforts through its super PAC, Fairshake.
