David Lawrence, a former Harvard Law dropout, has raised $6 million to develop Blue Voice, an AI tool designed to provide police officers with real-time legal guidance, aiming to reduce operational controversies and crimes.

The platform, inspired by the need for quick access to department rules, offers officers instant answers to their questions, akin to the legal tool Harvey or medical software OpenEvidence.

According to Lawrence, before Blue Voice, officers often resorted to outdated methods such as manually searching through 15,000-page manuals or using general-purpose AI tools that were not tailored to police-specific knowledge. Such tools could be inaccurate up to 30% of the time, making Blue Voice a significant improvement.

The startup's success is evident in its rapid growth and increased customer base. In one incident, a rookie officer used Blue Voice to confirm that he had legal grounds to intervene in a potential kidnapping situation, highlighting the tool's potential benefits.

Lawrence hopes that properly deployed AI can enhance public safety without compromising civil rights, drawing a line between effective technology and potential misuse.
