Nvidia Buys Hugging Face in $12.9 Billion Deal

AI’s open ecosystem just got a lot bigger — and more expensive.

Nvidia has confirmed its acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, bolstering its position in the AI development landscape. The platform hosts three million models, one million applications and 18 million developers. Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, stated that Hugging Face will remain open, supporting developers’ freedom in choosing their preferred tools and frameworks.

Hugging Face, founded in 2016, has raised over $395 million and recently rejected a $500 million offer from Nvidia. The company is now valued at $150 million annually, with a focus on open-source models. Huang sees open models as crucial for the future of AI, citing their role in cybersecurity and economic growth.

Meanwhile, Clem Delangue, Hugging Face’s CEO, expressed gratitude to the community for its support, noting that collaboration and visibility are key. This acquisition will likely lead to expanded support for Nvidia’s hardware, benefiting both companies in the AI sector.

Nvidia’s investment in open models is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its market position, with a recent $6 billion deal with Poolside to develop open models. Huang argues that these models are vital for the future, both for cybersecurity and economic stability.

The deal signals a significant shift in the AI industry, with Nvidia now controlling a major open-source platform. This move could influence the direction of AI development, potentially steering it more towards open-source and less proprietary solutions.
