Universal Music Group (UMG) is launching a new AI-powered platform that will allow users to create song remixes, mashups, and new takes on tracks. The platform, developed through a multiyear licensing agreement with ElevenLabs, a company specializing in AI voice and music generation, invites artists to participate in this innovative project. UMG’s move follows other AI deals with Udio, Spotify, Nvidia, and Klay, showcasing the label’s commitment to leveraging technology. The partnership with ElevenLabs will also explore additional fan experiences, though specifics remain vague.
‘By combining UMG’s global community and rights management expertise, with our AI models and products, we’ll enable artists and songwriters to create powerful new experiences for their fans, and ensure they are fairly compensated,’ Mati Staniszewski, CEO of ElevenLabs, states in the press release. This platform will remain separate from ElevenLabs’ Music API and ElevenMusic generator, ensuring a focused approach to the new venture.
UMG’s AI music platform is part of a broader trend in the industry, reflecting the growing influence of AI in music creation and consumption. However, the challenge remains: will this AI-driven innovation truly benefit artists and their creative output, or will it merely offer a new digital playground for tech enthusiasts?
Despite the potential, the success of this platform will depend on how effectively UMG and ElevenLabs navigate the complex landscape of rights management and artist compensation. As AI continues to shape the music industry, this partnership could set new precedents for collaboration and innovation.
