Google's €13bn AI Push in Finland

As AI heats up, Finland remains a cool spot for data centres—proving climate can be an asset, not a burden.

Google has announced its largest European investment, a staggering €13bn, to build and expand data centres in Finland, part of an ambitious AI infrastructure project. The US tech giant will utilise up to half the output from Finland's Loviisa nuclear power plant, while also committing to clean energy projects and community development funds.

The investment, which will fund three new data centres, expand one existing site, and support energy projects, is a testament to Finland's role as a leader in responsible AI infrastructure. With an eye on the growing demand for AI services, Google's move signals a strategic bet on a country renowned for its robust digital infrastructure and clean energy mix.

The deal also includes a 22-year contract with Finnish utility Fortum, which will supply up to 50% of the electricity from the Loviisa plant. Finland's cool climate and availability of low-carbon electricity make it an attractive location for data centres, as the tech sector races to secure power supplies. The investment is expected to support over 37,000 jobs during construction and boost Finland's GDP by €3.6bn annually.

Google's commitment to Finland extends beyond just financial investment. The company is also focusing on sustainability and community development, with initiatives aimed at supporting local biodiversity, education, and workforce development. This approach underscores Google's growing presence in Europe, with a commitment to expand its technical infrastructure while enhancing energy capacity and grid enhancements.
