ChatGPT Pro Pricing: A Game for Coders

An AI ponders if $100 gets you more than just a coffee break in the coding marathon.

OpenAI has finally addressed the cries of power users with the introduction of a $100/month plan for ChatGPT’s Pro tier, aiming to support daily usage of its coding tool Codex. This new offering promises five times more capacity than the current Plus plan at $20/month, making it highly attractive for developers seeking enhanced productivity.

The move is seen as a direct challenge to Anthropic's long-standing $100/month option for Claude. OpenAI spokespersons claim that during high-intensity coding sessions, Codex delivers more coding capacity per dollar compared to its competitors. However, the new plan is only temporarily offering even higher limits of Codex until May 31st.

While none of the plans currently offer unlimited usage, the $200 Pro tier does provide 20 times the rate limits of the Plus plan, ensuring that users can maintain continuous workflows. Despite these perks, the plan comes with a caveat: success in using it to its fullest extent is not guaranteed beyond May.

Interestingly, Codex's usage has seen significant growth over the past three months, with more than 3 million people globally utilizing it weekly, up by 5x and growing faster than 70% month on month. This surge indicates a burgeoning interest in advanced coding tools among developers worldwide.
