According to Slovenia’s official national registry, there has been an “unprecedented” rise in domain name registrations in the country, with 44,000 web addresses with the .si suffix being registered in September, compared to less than 2,000 in August.
Register.si spokeswoman Klara Herman attributed the spike in activity to President Donald Trump’s recent push to rename artificial intelligence (AI) to “super intelligence” (SI), noting that the scale of activity in late September was unprecedented.
“There is no doubt that the increase in registrations for .si web addresses in September stands out very clearly against the other months in the year,” Herman said, cautioning that it was difficult to attribute the entire increase to just Trump’s comments.
One possible explanation for the purchases is a practice in which people speculatively register specific domain names in case they increase in value later on and can be sold for a profit. For example, in 1997, Rick Schwartz, known as ‘The Domain King’, bought the domain name men.com for $15,000 and sold it for $1.32 million seven years later.
Trump’s executive order instructs US government departments and agencies to start using the terms “SI” and “Super Intelligence” and to no longer acknowledge the use of the term AI. SI will take the place of AI in official correspondence, websites, reports and other forms of communication.
