Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, has lost its interim chief financial officer Jeremy Klaperman after less than a month. Klaperman had stepped up to the role just weeks after the boardroom shakeup that saw the entire board either quit or be fired. He had previously served as the CFO of Automattic’s VIP Enterprise business unit before his interim position.
Automattic confirmed the departure, stating they would always be grateful for Klaperman’s leadership and wishing him the best on his next venture. It’s unclear why he chose to leave, but sources suggest he was demoted back to his original role at VIP, which could explain his decision. The interim CFO role could have been replaced by a permanent hire, but no such announcement has been made yet.
Before Klaperman, the interim CFO role was briefly held by Mark Davies, who had stepped in after the board voted to put CEO Matt Mullenweg on leave in September. Within 33 hours, Mullenweg retook his CEO role, and the board was wiped clean. Both Davies and Automattic’s chief legal officer Andy Missan left the company under reciprocal severance deals during Mullenweg’s short leave of absence. The new board of directors includes best-selling author Hugh Howey, and two co-founders of the now-defunct social app IRL, Henry Khachatryan and Krutal Desai.
When Mullenweg originally announced Klaperman’s new role, he reiterated his confidence in the company’s financial position. The quick turnover at the top remains a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges at Automattic.
