Volkswagen's ID.4 electric crossover is a thing of the past. In its place, the company has unveiled the ID. Tiguan, a nod to its best-selling model and a move towards more mainstream electric vehicles.
The ID. Tiguan is powered by an updated version of the company’s mass-market EV platform, now called MEB+, with battery packs ranging from 58 kWh to 77 kWh. It offers both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations, providing a range of up to 373 miles (600 km).
In terms of design, the ID. Tiguan moves towards a more mainstream aesthetic, part of VW's new 'Pure Positive' design language. The car is positioned as a premium alternative to the mainstream segment, both inside and out.
The ID. Tiguan represents a significant shift in Volkswagen's strategy, from a focus on high-profile electric models to a broader appeal in the electric vehicle market. With the ability to produce over a million ID.4s and ID.5s, VW is now looking to capitalise on its success by offering a more accessible electric vehicle.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the VW brand, commented, “The Tiguan is our best-selling model worldwide, and the ID.4 and ID.5 are among our most successful electric cars. The ID. Tiguan brings these two success stories together.”
