Elon Musk has openly considered merging Tesla and SpaceX, his two behemoth companies. In a meeting with financial analysts, Musk affirmed that the idea holds significant merit, though no guarantee exists for its actualisation.
The proposed merger would make it one of, if not the largest, in history, given Tesla's valuation of $1.5 trillion and SpaceX's of $2 trillion. SpaceX’s recent focus on AI infrastructure and cloud computing has seen it outpace Tesla in market value. Despite SpaceX's non-profitable status, Musk sees potential synergies in areas like AI, robotics, and chip manufacturing.
The process, however, is complex. Musk, as CEO of both companies, would be a conflicted party, thus requiring approval from a significant majority of Tesla's shareholders. Musk's recent moves suggest a pattern of integrating his companies under fewer banners, indicating a potential long-term strategy for efficiency and innovation.
Following Musk’s announcement, SpaceX’s share price saw an 8% rise, while Tesla’s climbed 2%. This reflects the market's cautious optimism about the potential benefits of such a merger. Only time will tell if this bold move will be as transformative as Musk envisions.
