Microsoft has adjusted the pricing of its Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 models by $500, reflecting the global RAM shortage. The 13-inch Surface Pro now starts at $1,499, up from $999, while the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7 has a new starting price of $1,499, previously priced at $999.
Even newer models are not immune to the price increase; the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop have seen their entry-level prices rise by $250. The 15-inch Surface Laptop is now priced at $1,599, a jump from its initial $1,299. A fully loaded version of the 15-inch model costs an eye-watering $3,649.
These price hikes put Microsoft’s devices in direct competition with Apple’s MacBook Neo, which starts at just $599 and offers better value for money, according to Windows Central. The rise in prices also prompts questions about the cost-effectiveness of buying a Surface device over alternatives, especially as new models could be similarly priced.
The global shortage of RAM has affected not only Microsoft but other tech companies too, driving up costs across the board. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will introduce more affordable devices this spring or summer; however, if history is any indicator, pricing is likely to remain high.
