Microsoft has announced significant price increases for its Surface PC lineup, with the cheapest models now priced at $1,500. The 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop have seen their prices jump by $250, from their initial launch prices of $799 and $899 respectively. Even the higher-end versions have seen a rise of $300.
The company cites recent increases in memory and component costs as the reason behind these hikes. With supply shortages for RAM and storage chips causing delays and stock depletion, it seems that Microsoft is not alone in facing financial strain.
These price changes could impact consumer decisions, making Microsoftβs Surface models less competitive compared to alternatives like Apple Silicon Macs. An equivalent MacBook Air now costs $400 less than a similarly specced Surface Laptop, which might push tech enthusiasts towards other brands.
The move also highlights the ongoing shift in technology towards Arm-based processors, as seen with the 2024 Surface updates. However, higher prices may dampen interest in these new models, especially considering the availability of cheaper yet highly capable alternatives like the MacBook Neo.
