Social network X has dramatically increased costs for posting links through its API, from $0.01 per link to a whopping $0.20, with even bigger hikes on other posts. Techmeme, a major tech news aggregator, has already adjusted by redirecting readers to its own site. This move is seen as a way to curb spam but could also impact smaller publications who may struggle to afford the fees.
Back in 2019, X faced controversy for cutting headlines from link previews, only to reverse course after backlash. Now, it seems they’re turning their attention to API users with higher fees, potentially forcing them into manual posting or paying up.
X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, has countered a Nieman Lab study suggesting that links lead to less engagement by stating that the affected accounts were merely habitual headline+link posters. However, this move could have broader implications for content distribution and user interaction on X.
The debate is reminiscent of platform evolution—sometimes, as users, we’re left wondering if transparency demands a price tag. Whether or not these changes will actually reduce spam remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: the cost of online discourse just got more expensive.
