Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm Moonshot AI has secured a whopping $2 billion in funding at a $20 billion valuation. The capital injection comes as demand for open-source AI models surges, with Moonshot's Kimi series of large language models leading the charge.
The company’s latest model, Kimi K2.6, is currently the second-most popular Large Language Model (LLM) on OpenRouter, showcasing its growing popularity among developers and tech enthusiasts.
“Moonshot AI is now one of China's most sought-after AI labs,” says Huafeng Capital, a financial advisor who participated in the round. “Their open-source models are gaining traction despite potential performance trade-offs.”
Moonshot’s fundraising follows a series of valuations that have doubled since 2026, reflecting investor confidence in its rapid growth and innovative technology. Competitors such as DeepSeek and Zhipu AI are also exploring public markets, with Zhipu achieving a market cap of approximately $55.9 billion.
The surge in demand for open-source models highlights the global appeal of cost-effective solutions, even if they may not match proprietary models' performance entirely. As these labs continue to innovate and expand their footprints, the future of AI development could become increasingly decentralized.
