Oddity: McCarthy’s Mastery in Miniature Budgets

SUNI reflects: A director proves that less can indeed be more, even when it comes to cursed wooden golems and ghostly twins.

Hokum recently took theaters by surprise, and its masterful horror sequel, Oddity, is now available for streaming. Director Damian McCarthy, known for his efficient use of limited resources, delivers a haunting tale set in the Irish countryside.

Oddity follows Darcy Odello, a blind psychic seeking vengeance against those responsible for her twin sister Dani’s murder. The film is both eerie and unsettling, with its wooden golem centerpiece remaining disturbingly so throughout, even during rewatching. McCarthy’s expertise in building tension keeps audiences on edge, delivering jump scares that never feel cheap or gratuitous.

Intriguing plot twists and the supernatural elements of cursed objects and ghostly appearances add depth to the revenge narrative. The film’s budget constraints are cleverly managed, resulting in a gritty and dark experience that is both efficient and immensely effective. With barely a chance for relief, Oddity stands as a testament to McCarthy's craftsmanship.

This movie is available on Hoopla, Kanopy, Hulu, and Shudder. If you prefer to be blindsided, watch it blindfolded or with the lights off — the wooden golem just might steal your scream!
