While Gen Z faces flak for their singleton status, there’s a harsh economic reality behind it: many simply can’t afford the luxury of dating. Dating apps like BLK are now offering free gas to encourage people to hit the road on dates.
This comes as gas prices hit a four-year high, with the average cost now $4.56 per gallon, up from $3.26 in 2025. The war in Iran has only made matters worse, driving energy costs even higher and potentially affecting grocery bills too.
The average cost of a date has risen by 12.5% this year, with 86% of US singles hitting pause on their social lives altogether. A quarter of those earning under $50,000 have given up dating entirely due to financial anxiety.
Brands are catching on, offering necessities like groceries and essentials in exchange for attention. It’s a stark reminder that we’re all navigating a world where basic needs often take precedence over luxury experiences.
