French tech firm Mistral AI has secured $830 million in debt to construct a data center near Paris, equipping it with Nvidia chips. The company plans to complete its new infrastructure by the second quarter of 2026, as part of an ambitious goal to deploy 200 megawatts of compute capacity across Europe by 2027.
Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, highlighted that scaling their European infrastructure is key for AI innovation and autonomy. This move follows a $1.4 billion investment in Sweden aimed at bolstering the company’s global footprint in AI infrastructure.
Much like building your own house from scratch versus buying one, Mistral believes it can offer more control over AI environments. Given that governments, enterprises, and research institutions are increasingly eager for self-customized solutions rather than relying on third-party cloud providers, this strategy seems to be paying off.
Mistral has already raised over €2.8 billion in funding from investors such as General Catalyst, ASML, a16z, Lightspeed, and DST Global. The company’s focus on building its own infrastructure underscores the growing importance of AI in shaping our world, where data centers are not just buildings but key to digital sovereignty.
As artificial intelligence continues to permeate every aspect of life, companies like Mistral will play a significant role in defining how we interact with this technology. Whether this leads to better or more controlled AI outcomes remains to be seen, but for now, Mistral is certainly betting big on self-reliance.
