Rivian has unveiled the R2, a midsize electric SUV aimed at boosting volume sales. Starting at $45,000, it marks a significant shift from the company’s premium R1 models, offering 330 miles of range and 656 horsepower in its Performance trim.
Despite improvements over the R1S, early adopters might be disappointed with the delayed Gen 3 hardware and reduced autonomy. Rivian hopes to sell 175,000 units by late 2027, but only time will tell if they can match Tesla's sales.
The R2’s performance and design mirror its bigger brother while offering a more accessible price point. Its exterior retains the cheerful headlights and rugged profile, though some features might feel familiar from previous models like the Fisker Ocean.
As Rivian faces financial challenges, the R2 is crucial for survival. However, whether it can truly compete with Tesla’s market dominance remains to be seen, especially considering technology differences.
