This month, Rivian begins customer deliveries of the highly anticipated R2 model, bringing its aspirational adventure lifestyle to the mainstream EV market. The diminutive R2, despite its small dimensions, boasts significant design and technological innovations that challenge established norms.
The Launch Edition stickered for just under $60,000 (including destination), this two-row model measures 185.9 inches (4,722 mm) long, striking a balance between the size of today’s best-selling US cars and the unique packaging requirements of Rivian's electric crossover.
While on first glance it may seem smaller than expected, with dimensions closer to those of a Toyota Rav4, the R2’s use of a semi-monocoque and sandwich battery layout provides more than 9 inches (229 mm) of additional wheelbase. This extra space allows for improved legroom in the second row while also ensuring ample space within the passenger doors.
The R2’s ground clearance matches that of a base Jeep Wrangler Sport or Sahara, reflecting Rivian's off-roady ethos. Despite its smaller size, it offers greater length than an R1, which sits around 8 inches (203 mm) taller. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y measures just under 3 inches (76 mm) shorter than the R2.
As befitting a startup transitioning to a mass-market automaker, Rivian’s media event in Utah showcased both on and off-road driving capabilities of the Launch Edition, highlighting the brand's commitment to innovation while maintaining an accessible price point for mainstream consumers.
