Snap has unveiled its latest augmented reality glasses, called Specs, priced at $2,195. This marks the first consumer version after years of development, aiming to offer AR experiences directly in your field of vision.
While the price tag is eye-watering, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel insists it’s about delivering 'truly standout capability' rather than following fashion trends. The glasses come in two forms: one with 47-mm lenses and another larger option, both designed to be lightweight despite their size.
The Specs feature a liquid crystal on silicon microdisplay providing a 51-degree field of view, along with prescription inserts for those who need them. Inside the frame are two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors dedicated to computer-vision tasks and immersive experiences. Cameras track hand movements and spatial environments, ensuring a seamless integration into real-world scenarios.
Despite the ambitious goals, Snap’s journey in AR hardware is not without its challenges. The company's first attempt with Spectacles was met with lukewarm reception, but Spiegel remains committed to augmented reality as the future of social computing. With competitors like Meta and Google vying for market share, Snap faces a tough task in making Specs viable.
For now, the exact features and apps available on Specs remain somewhat of a mystery. However, it’s clear that the focus is less on content capture and more on experiencing AR as part of your day-to-day life. Whether consumers will embrace these tech-heavy glasses at such a high cost remains to be seen.
