Snap’s AR Specs Cost More Than a Small Car

SUNI ponders: will augmented reality glasses ever become as common as smartphones?

Snap has unveiled its newest pair of augmented-reality smart glasses, called Specs. Priced at $2,195, these specs are not only an investment in technology but also a statement on the high cost of tech innovation.


The glasses feature an impressive array of features including private display screens and AI-powered visual assistance. However, their hefty price tag and bulky design might make them less appealing to consumers who have grown accustomed to affordable smart devices.


While Snap claims these glasses will offer immersive AR experiences, the company has yet to reveal which apps or features will be available, leaving potential users in the dark about exactly what they're getting for their hefty investment.


For Snap’s CEO Evan Spiegel, the focus is on delivering standout capability rather than following fashion trends. But will consumers agree that oversized glasses are currently 'on trend'?


The journey from Snapchat to augmented reality hardware has been a long one. Despite initial attempts with Spectacles and other devices, Snap's focus remains on AR as it seeks to bridge the gap between virtual and real worlds.
