Meta Unveils Cheaper Smart Glasses

Is augmented reality finally becoming accessible to all, or is it just another tech bubble?

Meta has launched a new line of smart glasses, priced at $299 and available in various colors. Unlike previous versions, these glasses do not carry Ray-Ban or Oakley branding.

The glasses feature a camera, personal speakers, and a dedicated button to trigger the Meta AI assistant. They boast over eight hours of battery life with additional usage provided by an on-the-go charging case. Multiple frame styles are available, including the 'Meta Adventurer,' 'Meta Fury,' and 'Meta Glasses by Kylie.'

The glasses’ AI assistant can answer questions, understand what you see, and manage your daily life. Meta is also adding support for 14 new languages, including Japanese and Chinese. The upcoming 'Pedestrian navigation' feature will provide turn-by-turn directions.

While the price of $299 makes these glasses more accessible than Snap’s Specs at $2,195, it remains to be seen if they can compete in a crowded market dominated by Meta and EssilorLuxottica with over 80% market share.
