Ford's F-150 Lightning seemed like ancient history when the new Slate truck hit the market for just under $25,000. As average car prices soar past £40,000, Slate has managed to bring electric trucks within reach of budget-conscious buyers.
The base 'Blank Slate' is a single-motor rear-wheel-drive truck with a 65-kWh battery and a claimed range of 205 miles. A modest 90 mph top speed means it’s best suited for everyday use, not flash drives on the motorway.
With its square design and minimalist interior, the Slate offers a retro yet practical alternative to traditional pickups. Pre-orders are now open with a $300 deposit, though buyers can opt for the cheaper Fastback or Squareback SUV variants.
The company’s confidence in this affordable offering is backed by plans to invest nearly £400 million in its factory in Warsaw, Indiana, proving it's serious about building a niche in the electric truck market. Whether that bet pays off remains to be seen, especially as prices continue to rise and competition intensifies.
