Microsoft has introduced cheaper versions of its 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, stripping them down to half the memory. The 12-inch Surface Pro now starts at $849, while the 13-inch Surface Laptop costs $949.
The reduction in RAM from 16GB to 8GB mirrors a trend in tech, where companies are often forced to cut features or performance to meet budget constraints. For those who value portability and don't necessarily need advanced computing power, these new models might be just the ticket.
It’s worth noting that while the memory has been halved, other specifications remain unchanged. The devices still feature an 8-core Snapdragon X Plus chip and 256GB of storage, but they won’t offer support for Copilot Plus, Microsoft's AI tech requiring at least 16GB of RAM.
Despite these cuts, the new Surface models are still more expensive than the $599 MacBook Neo, which has gained popularity with its speedy performance and affordability. This raises questions about value in a saturated market where tech companies must constantly innovate to stay ahead or simply survive.
