Rivian is raising its electric vehicle sales forecast for the year, predicting it will deliver between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles compared to last year's 42,247. This comes despite challenges such as the loss of federal tax credits and relaxed environmental regulations.
The company outperformed its own expectations in Q2 with robust growth in electric delivery vans (EDV) and R1 models, alongside the introduction of R2 deliveries. The R2 SUV, starting at $58,000, is set to be a key player, potentially hitting 20,000 to 25,000 units this year.
Rivian’s expansion includes a new factory in Illinois and a production facility in Georgia to meet the demand for R2s. However, it's unclear if this will lead to more R2 sales or increased deliveries from other models like commercial vans and trucks.
This forecast could signify Rivian’s confidence in its mass-market EV strategy but also highlights the company's ongoing financial struggle as it invests heavily in developing autonomous software for Uber.
