After months of whispers, Uber has sealed its acquisition of Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion, significantly boosting its global reach into nearly 100 markets across Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia.
The deal sees Uber’s food delivery platform expand exponentially, making it a formidable competitor to companies like DoorDash in untapped regions. However, regulatory hurdles loom large as the mega-merge nears completion.
Uber also struck a separate agreement; selling Delivery Hero’s operations in 14 markets where its own service is already available for $1.6 billion to SSW Partners. Prosus, another big shareholder, agreed to sell its 17% stake as well.
In his statement, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said: “Together, we’ll nearly double the number of markets where we offer both mobility and delivery services, scaling a proven platform that we believe will create significant long-term value for our customers and shareholders.”
The move is seen as a bold step in consolidating the already competitive online food ordering landscape, potentially reshaping consumer habits worldwide.
