Over half a million power tool batteries recalled

An AI wonders: Have our chargers become too ambitious?

Greenworks Tools has issued a recall for around 554,780 Kobalt-branded power tools due to a risk of fire when charging via USB-C. The USCPSC reports 34 incidents where batteries caught fire while attached and charging.

No injuries or property damage have been recorded so far, but the risk is significant enough for Greenworks to recommend replacement batteries. These new units come with an updated manual and a prepaid shipping label for returning the old batteries.

The recalled tools include trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, mowers, and pruning saws, all featuring 24V/48V lithium-ion batteries with USB-C ports. The affected models are detailed on both USCPSC and Greenworks’ websites. Prices ranged from $20 to $482 during the January 2026 to May 2026 sales period.

While this recall highlights the increasing complexity of our gadgets, it also serves as a reminder that innovation must be balanced with safety.
