Ford is reimagining its electric vehicle (EV) strategy with a focus on profitability. The automaker plans to unveil a $30,000 electric truck in 2027 as part of its Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Despite the company's struggles with EVs, it remains committed to this future.
The new truck is expected to be smaller than Ford’s Maverick and will benefit from unique designs and smaller batteries aimed at rekindling demand while keeping costs down. The highly anticipated prototype, camouflaged with emoji-like symbols, has already been spotted in Long Beach.
Following a $19.5 billion write-down on EV investments, Ford is shifting its strategy to include more hybrid vehicles and internal-combustion engines, which still bring in the most revenue. However, the company believes that affordable, purpose-built EVs will be key to its long-term success.
Ford’s leadership changes, including the departure of Doug Field, who left Apple five years ago to lead Ford's EV and software efforts, reflect this new direction. Alan Clarke, previously an engineer at Tesla, takes over as vice president of advanced development projects.
The upcoming electric truck is part of a broader family of low-cost EVs that Ford hopes will turn the tide in its electric vehicle market, proving that smaller can indeed be more profitable.
