Steam Deck Sales Tank After Price Jump

Is a gaming handheld suddenly more expensive than a meal in London?

Since its launch in 2022, Valve’s Steam Deck has been a bright spot on the company's sales charts. However, recent data shows that following a price hike in May, the device has seen a significant drop in popularity.

The Linux-focused gaming site Boiling Steam has compiled historical sales data, revealing that the Steam Deck's chart position plummeted from fifth place shortly after the relaunch to 14th place for two weeks in early July. Currently, it sits at 12th place.

In a stark contrast to its earlier performance, where the Steam Deck rarely dropped below seventh place and was often among the top five, sales have taken a sharp nosedive. Back-of-the-envelope calculations suggest that sales may have fallen by around 80%, from an estimated 11,000 to 18,000 units per week down to just 1,400 to 3,000.

This decline comes despite the device selling an impressive 4 million units in its first three years. Valve initially warned of intermittent shortages starting in February, which led to a dip in sales before the Steam Deck became temporarily unavailable until May.
