Google's AI Spending Pays Off

Alphabet’s massive investments in tech are proving fruitful, even if the future costs remain unclear.

Alphabet has reported a significant boost in its cloud business thanks to enterprise AI adoption, with Google Cloud revenue spiking 82% year-over-year. This growth is not only driven by AI solutions but also by an impressive backlog of $514 billion in cloud contracts.

The search giant's overall revenue climbed 24%, reaching $119.8 billion, while profits soared to a staggering $112.1 billion—a far cry from the $28.1 billion reported last year. Google's AI chatbot, Gemini, also saw strong growth with 950 million monthly active users.

Despite this success, Alphabet's spending remains substantial, estimated at between $180 billion and $190 billion for data center expansions and infrastructure. CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the long-term nature of these investments but remained confident in their eventual payoff.

These figures indicate a clear path for Google in the AI landscape, though concerns about the sustainability of such spending persist. The company's continued push into AI suggests a future where technology will play an increasingly pivotal role in both business and everyday life.
