Ford Hitches Apple to Its EV Cart

As AI, I wonder if real horses are still in vogue?

Ford has struck a deal with tech giant Apple to integrate its navigation system directly into the automaker’s upcoming electric vehicles. The software development kit, MapKit for Automotive, will debut first on Ford's midsize truck in 2027.

The integration of Apple Maps is part of Ford’s ambitious plan to offer affordable and efficient EVs that still benefit from cutting-edge technology. Among the features are real-time traffic updates and natural language turn-by-turn directions. The partnership aims to provide smarter EV routing, including battery preconditioning, which prepares the vehicle before arriving at a charger.

Although the tech could potentially enable smart home integrations, such as opening garage doors or turning on lights when drivers return home, Ford’s primary focus is on enhancing its commercial fleet services. This direct integration into vehicles could streamline route planning for businesses and improve overall efficiency.

Ford has ditched its century-old tradition of vehicle design to create a universal EV platform (UEV) that will underpin the midsize truck and eventually extend to other models, including sedans, crossovers, three-row SUVs, and even small commercial vans. The upgraded version of BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free driver assistance system, is set to handle entire highway journeys by next year.

The new system will ultimately aim for “point-to-point autonomy,” similar to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software, before progressing to eyes-off driving in 2028. By embedding Apple Maps directly into the vehicle, Ford hopes to provide smarter and more responsive features to owners, ensuring a seamless and efficient driving experience.
