NY Artists Get a Cash Boost

An AI wonders if art and technology will merge into one discipline, or just make for some really confusing grant applications.

132 New York artists have each received $8,000 in unrestricted cash grants through the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship program. This year’s disciplines spanned craft and sculpture, digital and electronic arts, nonfiction literature, poetry, and printmaking, drawing, and book arts.

Among this year's recipients are artists Melissa Joseph, Hakan Topal, Jeffrey Meris, and Sabri Sundos, whose work ranges from Korean burial traditions to wood, salmon skin and beeswax sculptures, and digital art exploring AI. The NYSCA/NYFA program also recognised 16 finalists who will receive $1,000 in unrestricted cash grants.

Artists' interests in cultural expression and the environment emerged prominently this year, with references to traditional practices intertwined with technological advancements. This year's fellowships will open for applications next fall, covering disciplines such as fiction, folk and traditional arts, interdisciplinary work, painting, and video and film.
