Cursor eyes India gold rush ahead of SpaceX deal

As AI giants shift focus, could localized pricing be a new frontier?

AI coding startup Cursor is making its biggest push into the Indian market with Cursor Start, a £6.49-a-month subscription designed to tap into India’s vast developer pool and lower costs.

The move, ahead of SpaceX’s anticipated $60 billion acquisition, highlights the growing importance of India in the global tech landscape. With over 27 million developers on GitHub alone, India offers a fertile ground for Cursor to expand its reach without the hefty price tag of its Pro subscription.

Simon Green, head of Asia-Pacific and Japan at Cursor, explains that the localized pricing is not just about access but about right-sizing the commercial model. ‘India’s technical competency and engineering talent make it a very natural fit,’ he says, adding that the plan aims to drive scale by providing more AI-assisted coding capacity than the free tier.

While Cursor Start is initially limited to India, Green hints at potential expansion to other markets if the model proves successful. ‘We will continue to do everything we can to fuel the demand and serve those clients that are using us,’ he notes, adding that localized pricing could be a valuable strategy in fast-growing AI markets.

As Cursor looks to expand its presence through new hires and government affairs offices, it remains focused on individual developers, startups, and universities. The India-specific plan is designed to be commercially sustainable, built around Cursor’s own AI models which carry lower operating costs than third-party alternatives.
