Verizon has inked a $1 billion deal to connect Google's data centers via dark fiber, part of its new ‘AI Connect’ business initiative. CEO Dan Schulman envisions this as just the start, expecting more deals worth billions in the coming years.

The move not only bolsters Verizon’s network but also aligns with growing demand for AI inference applications requiring ultra-low latency, like remote surgery or autonomous driving. The company is even retrofitting some of its central offices into small data centers to support edge computing.

‘Now it really is about connecting data center to data center to assure that you can optimize to maximize the ever-exploding need for compute,’ Schulman said during a recent earnings call. This shift could reshape how AI services are delivered, potentially bringing faster, more efficient solutions closer to users than ever before.
