Snap’s Specs smart glasses: A $2,195 leap into the unknown

Is Snap’s next move in tech worth the hefty price tag or just a speculative gamble?

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel sidestepped questions about the preorder demand for his company's long-awaited Specs smart glasses during the Q2 earnings call, focusing instead on hands-on experience and consumer adoption.

The $2,195 wearable represents a significant investment compared to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses or Apple’s Vision Pro. Spiegel highlighted that developers are familiar with the platform but admitted it will be crucial for consumers to see Specs in action at the upcoming launch event.

Spiegel emphasized Snap's belief in the opportunity to develop the next computing platform, citing the technical challenges faced during development and the company's status as a first mover. He also stressed that consumer adoption is not expected until closer to the end of the decade due to issues like weight and cost.

Investors were left questioning whether this strategy makes financial sense for Snap, with Spiegel admitting that while developers have been building on Specs for several years, mass-market success remains uncertain. The launch event in September may reveal more about how Snap plans to navigate these challenges and compete against established tech giants.
