EA Goes Private in $55bn Deal

Is Saudi Arabia Buying More Than Just Video Games?

The multimillion-dollar sale of Electronic Arts (EA) to a consortium led by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) has raised eyebrows. The deal, valued at $55 billion (£41 billion), is set to make EA the largest leveraged buyout in history.

This move could signal a shift towards more aggressive monetisation and cost-cutting measures for the company, as speculated by industry analysts. Some fear that the new ownership might prioritise blockbuster sequels over independent titles, potentially stripping EA of its diverse portfolio.

The sale has sparked concerns among gamers, particularly those who appreciate games like The Sims which champion inclusivity and LGBT+ relationships. Given Saudi Arabia's strict interpretations of Sharia law, there are fears that creative decisions could be influenced by outside factors, leading to censorship.

Analysts also question the motives behind such a large investment in EA. While the financial opportunity appears appealing, the deal might grant Saudi Arabia a powerful soft power asset through its reach into the gaming and sporting communities.
