Indian electric vehicle startup River has raised a hefty $120 million in its Series C funding round, aiming to ramp up production and introduce more models. The funds will propel the company's single-model moped, Indie, closer to mass-market success.
The investment comes from established players like Yamaha Motor and new entrants such as Elev8 Venture Partners and Claypond Capital. River has already sold over 50,000 Indies through 75 stores across India since its launch in 2021.
Founder Aravind Mani credits the startup’s focus on utility rather than luxury for its success. ‘The restriction is the capacity,’ he noted, with plans to double production within a few years and expand retail outlets to 400 by 2028.
The journey hasn’t been smooth; scaling from 20 vehicles per day to 300 demanded intensive learning. Yet, River remains optimistic about its future in India’s rapidly electrifying two-wheeler market. The question is: will other countries follow suit?
